I really enjoy project management, what I don’t enjoy is an industry that is resistant to change. And I’m not talking about small change, and I’m not talking about being late adopters to change, I’m talking about cutting edge change. When I decided not to pursue Lopico after school, a big part of it was because I thought I needed some experience working in a professional web development environment. I have that, and now I miss the other side - the ability to quickly change and to push advancing technologies.

So, there are a number of things I can do about this. I can do something productively from the inside and try to push technologies - which I’ve done to this point with varying levels of success - or I can turn back to creating. The problem with working from the inside is that I work with an industry that is resistant to change. The problem with getting back into writing code on the side is time. And therein lies the frustration.

Of course maybe client work just isn’t for me. I’ve always been more interested in product work than implementation.

moblogging

I’ve run into a problem with a new blog that I am launching in connection with a new project that I am working on. The problem I am having is one of platform choice. I am very happy with tumblr as a moblogging platform, and very unhappy with wordpress for moblogging. In fact, the failure of wordpress as a moblogging platform is the primary -if not only- reason I am using tumblr. I write from a winmo phone, when I send posts to wordpress the text still contains mso markup. That essentially negates the convenience of moblogging as I am then forced to clean up every post. The problem with tumblr for the new project is that it doesn’t offer as much in terms of customization. that’s fine for the blogs I have on tumblr - but it really won’t work for my new project. It could work, but it wouldn’t be ideal. I’ll have to think about it, but imay end up reluctantly using wordpress.

Chipotle tacos

Forget the burritos… The tacos are the best thing on the menu… And i’m addicted to them.

Lopico may be returning soon

it will have different function, it will be invite only, and it may even be under a different name… but I may be returning to the local review space, in which case I might as well use the same old domain.

Airshow

Went to the Chicago Air and Water show this weekend, on the boat of a friend of Shawn’s friend. Watching from the lake was an amazing once ina lifetime experience. Josh F called it “one of the top three things ever<” I wouldn’t go that far, but it was really cool.

Josh F and Shawn

Josh F and Shawn

Congratulations Josh

One of my oldest and best friends moved to chicago a couple weeks ago and has already found a job. Stop by and say hi. Nervous dog is so good, i’lll have to load up on grounds while in town. Yes, i’ve moved to Chicago, a city of a million coffee shops, with an intelligensia or lavazza on every corner that doesn’t have a starbucks, but nothing tops ND. I suppose that’s why it ranked so highly on Lopico, well that and the cheating. ND and a few others were great for teaching me how to fight spammers, or maybe I was just preventing viral marketing. I suppose I chose integrity a few too many times. Anyway, the coffee is great. Great coffee and a great deli are two of the things i’ve had a harder time finding in Chicago. I suppose there is julius mienl for coffee, but that’s not quite the same. And really I have barely tried a reuben in chicago, but i’m not the only one echoing my complaint. And now i’m hungry…

tony

tony

Mobile web crash

Is the mobile web headed for a crash? As much as I like it, use it, and think it will one day be the primary way to use the internet for personal use - I still think it may be headed for a crash. Despite webkit and the proliferation of smart phones and web ready devices, I think society outside of the tech world just isn’t ready. Until you have a “ready for everyone” pack of sites AND a way for the majority of the population to reach the information at high speeds, it’s not going to reach critical mass. The good thing is, the majority of vc dollars are sticking with traditional web sites so the crash will be soft. Or maybe that’s the bad thing. The more money poured into mobile tech, the more money there is in supporting technologies. Personally i’d rather see a lot of great sites fail in a way that we can learn from them and build the next mobile web. So yes, it may fail but I still want to pour time into it. The end result will be a mobile web that means much more than sites stripped of css and that is worth the upfront cost.
